Creating Customized CD DVD Labels With LightScribe

By

What is LightScribe?

To keep this Hub simple :) LightScribe is a fairly new technology that when using a LightScribe enabled burner (DVD/CD) with LightScribe burnable media (CD-R, DVD-R, etc.) you can impose images onto a CD cover without the mess of sticky peelers and ink.

Some Great Ideas for LightScribe Labels:

  • Family Vacations
  • Favorite Music Band Covers
  • Picture Albums or an Accessory to Your Scrapbook.
  • Weddings
  • School Projects

Watch the short video below, which is nothing more than a promotional video from LightScribe. You will see examples of it's use. Then in the following paragraph I will point out the pro's and con's of using LightScribe leaving you as the end user to decide.

Don't forget about the poll at the bottom of the hub.

Lightscribe Pro's & Con's: Everyday Use

I personally use LightScribe as a business for when I order AVG Internet Security and when creating driver discs for my clients. I like the professional look and personal touch it creates. AVG is a down-loadable software, with the option ot purchase the cd as a backup, however it takes a while to receive it, so I create a LightScribe CD-R with their license number, their name, and any other relative information.

Never the less, let's move onto the Pro's and Con's.

Pro's of LightScribe:

  • It will allow you place images directly with a laser onto the surface of a LightScribe ready media (CD/DVD) of whatever your heart desires with the burning software you have on your computer.
  • I believe it is almost painless to use if you know just a little about graphics and are strong willed person to learn.
  • Way cheaper than using ink, given there is no ink, there isn't any room for smears either or paper jams.

Con's of LightScribe:

  • The biggest and foremost con at the moment for LightScribe is that if you have a CD or DVD with a full image to burn on, then you are looking at about 15 to 20 minutes for it to complete on best mode. This isn't bad if you are only doing a couple of CD's, but if doing more than that, you may want to look into a multiple LightScribe enabled CD/DVD burner device.
  • Unfortunately, you are limited to black and white. There are options however to purchase different colored label backgrounds versus just the plain tan color. This is nice for seasonal CDs or dedicating certain years to colors.

Conclusion:

Overall, LightScribe is cool and looks sharp. However, if you are looking for color it may be a while until they figure that one out. Give it a try today and see what you think. Let us know your thoughts with the comments section at the bottom of this lens.
